Dear patients

I would like to introduce myself to you with a short CV.

After graduating from high school in my hometown Essen in the Ruhr area, I performed community service at the Alfried Krupp Hospital. Subsequently, I studied medicine at the Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf. I completed my medical training in three clinics: the Department of Neurosurgery at the Klinikum Duisburg, the Department of Neurology at the Maria Hilf Klinik in Mönchengladbach, and later at the Department of General Psychiatry and Gerontopsychiatry at the LVR Klinik Viersen. There I worked as a senior physician and was, among other things, responsible for the further education of my colleagues for the subject of neurology. I am a specialist for neurology since 2006 and a specialist for psychiatry and psychotherapy since 2008. I am a member of the German Society of Neurology and the German Society of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy.

In my dissertation, I researched the topic "Investigations on the Expression of Chemotherapy Resistance-Associated Genes in Human Gliomas". In general, the aim of this work was to find new ways of treating brain tumors.

Neurology is the medical specialty that deals with the disorders of the nervous system and musculature. The nervous system includes the brain, the spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves.

What are the neurological diseases? Neurological disorders can be divided into the following groups:

How are neurological diseases diagnosed? Neurological diagnostics

Neurological examination

In neurological diagnostics, an exact questionnaire (anamnesis) and neurological examination play an outstanding role. By careful neurological examination, it is often possible to precisely locate disturbances in the brain or spinal cord. In the course of the neurological examination the brain nerves, the muscular strength, the motor function, the sensitivity, the coordination, the muscle tone, the gait and the balance are thoroughly examined.

Psychiatry -Psychotherapy-

Mental diseases are not explained by simple models. Many factors are involved when the psyche is out of balance: biological (e.g., hormonal balance, predisposition), psychological (e.g., self-confidence, frustration tolerance), social (e.g., work situation, partnership) and spiritual (eg life, religion). Much is still not fully understood today. The trigger for a mental crisis or illness is usually a stressful situation, for example in the workplace, in the partnership or in the family. But also biological changes in the body, for example after a birth, can trigger mental illnesses. The extent of the influence of genetic factors is assessed differently by different experts.

Affected persons sometimes think that they are responsible for their own illness. Also close relatives like parents or partners torment themselves with guilt feelings. This is understandable but not professional. Mental illness is not self-inflicted, and only individual persons are responsible for it.

When does one speak of illness?

The border between healthy and sick is not easy to lay for people, because we all feel sad, anxious or unconcentrated from time to time. Negative feelings alone are not yet a sign of a disease. As a rule, we have sufficient psychological resistance to cope with stress and crises without becoming ill. Only when this force is absent and coping cannot be achieved for a long time, a disease can occur. Whether a disease needs to be treated or not can be assessed by psychiatric and psychotherapeutic specialists. Mental diseases are manifold.

As with the physical, there are also a large number of different diseases in mental illnesses. The various diseases are also individually pronounced in each individual individual.

Psychiatric diagnostics

A comprehensive psychotherapeutic and psychiatric exploration is of great importance in the preparation of an individual, tailor-made treatment. Only when the causes of the problem are known, a concrete solution can be developed. The precise understanding of the interplay of the various factors that have led to the disease and maintain it allows an individually tailored psychotherapy. Therefore, accurate diagnosis is the basis of any successful treatment.

Within the framework of the diagnostic investigation, you will be informed in detail about all aspects of the planned treatment in order to weigh the pros and cons for yourself and to make a conscious decision for -even or against- the treatment.
